Arlo and the Big Pool

Arlo is afraid of the deep water, but a patient friend helps him take one little step at a time.

The swimming pool was huge and blue. Arlo stood at the edge, toes curled. The water looked so deep. β€˜I can’t do it,’ Arlo whispered. His knees were wobbling.

Percy the pony smiled kindly. β€˜We’ll go slowly,’ he said. β€˜First, just put your feet in.’ Arlo sat on the side and dipped his toes. Splash! It was cool and nice.

Next, Arlo stepped into the shallow end with armbands. Benji the octopus swam beside him. β€˜I’ll stay right here,’ said Benji. Arlo kicked. Splash, splash, splash!

Day by day, Arlo did more. He blew bubbles. He floated on his back, looking at the ceiling lights. He even put his face in the water. Each time, Benji cheered.

At last, the day came. Arlo pushed off the wall and swam, all by himself, across the pool. β€˜I’m swimming!’ he shouted. Everyone applauded. Arlo had never felt so proud.
