Benji Lives Where It’s Cold
Benji builds an igloo with her family and has a snug night under the northern lights.
Benji lived in a land of ice and snow. One bright, cold morning, Benji said, ‘Let’s build an igloo!’ With Harvey the hedgehog, he cut blocks of snow and stacked them in a ring.
Block by block, the dome grew higher. Soon there was a round white house with a little doorway. Inside, it was dim and snug. Benji laid down furs, a lantern and fish stew.
That night, they ate fish stew and told stories. Outside the wind howled, but in the igloo it was warm. Harvey snuggled up. ‘This is the best house,’ he said, yawning.
Then Benji crept outside. The sky was dancing! Green and purple ribbons of light swirled across the stars, the northern lights. Benji gasped. Harvey came out too. They stood quietly and watched.
Later, tucked in under the furs, Benji whispered, ‘Goodnight, igloo.’ And as the aurora flickered over the snow, Benji fell asleep with a smile.
