Cara and the Dancing Scarecrow
Every night, the old scarecrow wishes he could dance. Cara has a plan.
In the middle of the cornfield stood an old scarecrow named Stitches. All day he watched the crows. All night he watched the stars. And every night, he sighed, ‘I wish I could dance.’
Cara the cow heard the sigh. ‘Poor Stitches,’ said Cara. ‘He stands there all alone.’ Cara had an idea. She asked Daisy the duck and Ollie the little bird to help.
That night, under the full moon, the animals crept to the field. Daisy played a polka on a tin whistle. Ollie took a bit of straw string from Stitches’ arm and tied it to a tree. Cara took another.
Then, one, two, three, they pulled the strings. Stitches’ arms swung. His legs swayed. He twirled this way and that, like a puppet in a play. ‘I’m dancing!’ he cried. ‘I’m really dancing!’
They danced until the sun came up. The next morning, Stitches stood in the field again, as still as ever. But he had a big smile on his face. And every full moon after, they did it again.
