Cara and the Giant Pumpkin
Everyone is growing something for the harvest festival. Cara’s pumpkin is the biggest yet, but it won’t budge.
All summer, Cara the cow watered and weeded a gigantic pumpkin. By autumn, it was enormous. ‘It will win first prize at the harvest festival!’ she thought proudly.
The festival was tomorrow. But a gigantic pumpkin was so huge that Cara could not move it. She pushed. She pulled. She rolled. It would not budge. Cara flopped on the grass, dejected.
Theo the piglet wandered past. ‘Need a hand?’ he asked. Together, they pushed. It moved a little. Then Esme the elephant came along. ‘Let me help,’ she said in a deep voice.
The three of them heaved and hoed. They laid down logs to roll it, and slowly, slowly, a gigantic pumpkin rolled to the festival. Neighbours stopped to cheer them on, and soon half the farm was pushing.
At the festival, Ollie the owl looked at the entries. ‘The biggest of all!’ he announced. Cara stepped up to get the ribbon. But Cara looked at the crowd behind her. ‘It wasn’t just me,’ she said.
So Cara shared the ribbon with every helper. They baked a great pie from the crop and fed the whole festival. It was the best harvest the farm had ever known.
