Cleo’s Scarecrow Who Wanted to Dance
Every night, the old scarecrow wishes he could dance. Cleo has a plan.
In the middle of the cornfield stood an old scarecrow named Stitches. All day he watched the crows. All night he watched the stars. And every night, he sighed, ‘I wish I could dance.’
Cleo the cow heard the sigh. ‘Poor Stitches,’ said Cleo. ‘He stands there all alone.’ Cleo had an idea. She asked Ravi the duck and Felix the fox to help.
That night, under the full moon, the animals crept to the field. Ravi played a polka on a tin whistle. Felix took a bit of straw string from Stitches’ arm and tied it to a tree. Cleo took another.
Then, one, two, three, they pulled the strings. Stitches’ arms swung. His legs swayed. He twirled this way and that, like a puppet in a play. ‘I’m dancing!’ he cried. ‘I’m really dancing!’
They danced until the sun came up. The next morning, Stitches stood in the field again, as still as ever. But he had a big smile on his face. And every full moon after, they did it again.
