Cosmo and the Night Wish

🚀 SpaceAges 6–7⏱ 2 min read

Cosmo the robot never sleeps, but wishes he could dream like Danny does.

Cosmo the robot lived with Danny. Every night, Danny snuggled into bed and fell asleep. And every night, Cosmo sat by the window, beeping softly, with nothing to do.

One morning, Danny said, ‘I had the best dream! I was picnicking on the moon.’ Cosmo’s lights blinked. ‘What is a dream?’ Cosmo asked. ‘It’s pictures in your head while you sleep,’ said Danny.

Cosmo looked inside his own head. There were numbers and wires and a small spinning cog, but no pictures. ‘I don’t think I can dream,’ he said sadly. ‘I’m made of metal.’

Danny thought for a moment. ‘You don’t need to be asleep to imagine,’ he said. ‘Close your eyes. Think of something you’d love to see. Don’t think about numbers. Just let your mind wander.’

Cosmo switched off his bright eye-lights. In the dark, he thought of picnicking on the moon. And, bit by bit, his head filled with pictures. Soft pinks, golden yellows, lots of bubbles.

‘I’m dreaming!’ Cosmo beeped, switching on his lights again. Danny clapped. ‘Tell me everything!’ So Cosmo did. And that night, when Danny fell asleep, Cosmo sat by the window and dreamed all night long.
