Dev’s Scarecrow Who Wanted to Dance
Every night, the old scarecrow wishes he could dance. Dev has a plan.
In the middle of the cornfield stood an old scarecrow named Stitches. All day he watched the crows. All night he watched the stars. And every night, he sighed, ‘I wish I could dance.’
Dev the rabbit heard the sigh. ‘Poor Stitches,’ said Dev. ‘He stands there all alone.’ Dev had an idea. He asked Caleb the cow and Leo the little bird to help.
That night, under the full moon, the animals crept to the field. Caleb played a gentle lullaby on a tin whistle. Leo took a bit of straw string from Stitches’ arm and tied it to a tree. Dev took another.
Then, one, two, three, they pulled the strings. Stitches’ arms swung. His legs swayed. He twirled this way and that, like a puppet in a play. ‘I’m dancing!’ he cried. ‘I’m really dancing!’
They danced until the sun came up. The next morning, Stitches stood in the field again, as still as ever. But he had a big smile on his face. And every full moon after, they did it again.
