Eli Looks Behind
Eli digs up a chest. There’s no gold inside, just a note that says ‘look behind you’.
Eli the elephant was a little pirate, and had one wish: to find treasure. He had a spade and a map. He had a hat with a feather. All he needed was a chest of gold.
Eli walked across the island, counting steps. ‘One, two, three, four,’ he said. At last he came to a big white rock. ‘X marks the spot,’ he whispered. He began to dig.
Dig, dig, dig! Clunk! There it was, a little wooden chest. Eli’s heart was pounding. He took a deep breath and lifted the lid. Inside was no gold or jewels at all. There was only a note.
The note said, ‘The real treasure is behind you.’ Eli turned around. Standing there, with a big smile and a basket of shiny red apples, was Kira the koala.
‘Hello,’ said Kira. ‘I buried the chest to find a friend. I’m new on the island and didn’t know anyone. I wanted someone who loved adventure.’ Eli grinned from ear to ear.
They sat on the sand, sharing shiny red apples and telling stories. As the sun set, Eli said, ‘You know, you’re better than gold.’ ‘You too,’ said Kira. And they sailed home together.
