Felix and the Slow Road

A proud runner mocks a slow friend and learns that steady effort beats a quick start.

Felix the fox was the fastest in the forest and loved to boast. One day, Felix laughed at Suki the squirrel. β€˜You are so slow!’ Felix said. Suki said calmly, β€˜Slow, but I always get there.’

β€˜Let’s race to the top of the hill,’ said Suki. β€˜The winner gets a carrot cake.’ Felix laughed so hard. β€˜You’ll never beat me!’ But Suki only smiled.

The race began. Felix zoomed off, leaving Suki behind. Halfway up, Felix looked back. Suki was just a dot. β€˜I have plenty of time,’ Felix thought, and lay down for a nap.

Suki didn’t stop. Step by step, one foot after another, Suki plodded up the hill. Past the sleeping Felix. Past the rock. Past the old pine tree. Never stopping.

When Felix woke up, Suki was already at the top, holding a carrot cake. Felix dashed up, but too late. β€˜You won,’ said Felix, embarrassed. β€˜Slow and steady,’ smiled Suki. And Felix never boasted again.
