Harvest Day at Percy’s Farm
Everyone is growing something for the harvest festival. Percy’s pumpkin is the biggest yet, but it won’t budge.
All summer, Percy the duck watered and weeded a huge sunflower. By autumn, it was enormous. ‘It will win first prize at the harvest festival!’ he thought proudly.
The festival was tomorrow. But a huge sunflower was so huge that Percy could not move it. He pushed. He pulled. He rolled. It would not budge. Percy flopped on the grass, dejected.
Alfie the rabbit wandered past. ‘Need a hand?’ he asked. Together, they pushed. It moved a little. Then Cleo the cow came along. ‘Let me help,’ she said in a deep voice.
The three of them heaved and hoed. They laid down logs to roll it, and slowly, slowly, a huge sunflower rolled to the festival. Neighbours stopped to cheer them on, and soon half the farm was pushing.
At the festival, Enzo the elephant looked at the entries. ‘The biggest of all!’ he announced. Percy stepped up to get the ribbon. But Percy looked at the crowd behind him. ‘It wasn’t just me,’ he said.
So Percy shared the ribbon with every helper. They baked a great pie from the crop and fed the whole festival. It was the best harvest the farm had ever known.
