Hattie and the Very Polite Dragon
A dragon knocks at the castle door. Hattie decides to be kind and invite it in for tea.
Knock, knock, KNOCK! Someone was at the castle door. Esme the elephant peeped through the window and gasped. ‘A dragon!’ she cried. ‘Everyone hide!’
But Hattie was the bravest and kindest in the castle. She walked right up to the door and opened it. There stood Dylan the dragon, holding a tiny bunch of flowers. ‘Hello,’ said Dylan shyly. ‘Is it teatime?’
‘Oh!’ said Hattie. ‘It is exactly teatime. Please come in.’ Esme nearly fainted, but Hattie led Dylan into the great hall and set the table with butter scones and mint tea.
Oh dear, Dylan was a very big guest! His tail knocked over a chair. His sneeze blew out all the candles. But Dylan said sorry every time, and Hattie only laughed.
At last, Esme crept in. ‘I thought dragons were scary,’ she said. ‘This one is just lonely,’ said Hattie. Esme sat down and took a butter scones. Soon the three of them were chatting like old friends.
When the stars came out, Dylan stood up. ‘Thank you for the loveliest tea ever,’ he said. ‘Come back anytime,’ said Hattie. And every Friday after that, the dragon came to tea.
