Kira and the Stormy Night
When a big storm puts out the lighthouse lamp, Kira climbs the stairs to save the boats.
On a cliff by the sea stood a tall white lighthouse. Elsa the elephant was the lighthouse keeper, and Kira came to help every day after school.
One evening, the sky turned dark and the wind began to howl. Big waves crashed on the rocks. βStormβs coming,β said Elsa. βWe must keep the light shining so that the boats can find the harbour.β
But suddenly, a loud CRACK! Lightning struck, and the lighthouse lamp went dark. Elsa tried the switch. Nothing. βThe bulb has blown,β Elsa said. βAnd I canβt climb the stairs with my sore leg.β
Out on the water, a yellow rescue boat was heading for the rocks. It couldnβt see where to go. Kira looked at the dark tower, then at the stormy sea. βIβll go,β said Kira. βI can do it.β
Kira took the spare bulb and a torch and began to climb. Up, up, up the spiral stairs. βOne hundred steps,β she counted. The wind rattled the windows, but Kira kept going.
At the very top, Kira carefully swapped the old bulb for the new one. She flipped the switch. FLASH! A great golden beam swept across the waves, lighting up the whole sea.
Far out, a yellow rescue boat turned and followed the light safely into the harbour. The crew waved. Kira waved back from the tower. βWell done,β said Elsa, when Kira came back down. βYou are a true keeper of the light.β
