Leo’s Scarecrow Who Wanted to Dance
Every night, the old scarecrow wishes he could dance. Leo has a plan.
In the middle of the cornfield stood an old scarecrow named Stitches. All day he watched the crows. All night he watched the stars. And every night, he sighed, ‘I wish I could dance.’
Leo the piglet heard the sigh. ‘Poor Stitches,’ said Leo. ‘He stands there all alone.’ Leo had an idea. He asked Louie the lamb and Bear the bear to help.
That night, under the full moon, the animals crept to the field. Louie played a waltz on a tin whistle. Bear took a bit of straw string from Stitches’ arm and tied it to a tree. Leo took another.
Then, one, two, three, they pulled the strings. Stitches’ arms swung. His legs swayed. He twirled this way and that, like a puppet in a play. ‘I’m dancing!’ he cried. ‘I’m really dancing!’
They danced until the sun came up. The next morning, Stitches stood in the field again, as still as ever. But he had a big smile on his face. And every full moon after, they did it again.
