The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Milo the mouse yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the busy bees,’ whispered Milo. He stepped out into the garden in his nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Nell, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the sleepy owl,’ whispered Milo. He walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the gentle moon,’ whispered Milo. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Milo smiled back. His eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Milo walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Nell tucked the blanket up to Milo’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Milo,’ said Nell.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Milo. He closed his eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
