Nico’s Bad Hair Day
Nico’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Nico woke up to find that his hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Nico tried to flatten it with three tight hats. But the hair just popped off like corks. ‘Oh no,’ he groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ He tried again. And again.
By the time Nico gave up, his hair was wilder than ever. He went to school with his hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Sam the squirrel spotted him.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Sam. Nico sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Sam grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Pip the puppy said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Nico began to smile. He felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ He flashed. And in the photo, Nico sat in the middle with a huge grin, his hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Nico’s hairstyle the next day. And Nico learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
