Opal the robot lived with Rani. Every night, Rani snuggled into bed and fell asleep. And every night, Opal sat by the window, beeping softly, with nothing to do.
One morning, Rani said, ‘I had the best dream! I was flying over a candy-coloured sea.’ Opal’s lights blinked. ‘What is a dream?’ Opal asked. ‘It’s pictures in your head while you sleep,’ said Rani.
Opal looked inside her own head. There were numbers and wires and a small spinning cog, but no pictures. ‘I don’t think I can dream,’ she said sadly. ‘I’m made of metal.’
Rani thought for a moment. ‘You don’t need to be asleep to imagine,’ she said. ‘Close your eyes. Think of something you’d love to see. Don’t think about numbers. Just let your mind wander.’
Opal switched off her bright eye-lights. In the dark, she thought of flying over a candy-coloured sea. And, bit by bit, her head filled with pictures. Soft pinks, golden yellows, lots of bubbles.
‘I’m dreaming!’ Opal beeped, switching on her lights again. Rani clapped. ‘Tell me everything!’ So Opal did. And that night, when Rani fell asleep, Opal sat by the window and dreamed all night long.
