Otto and the Spice Market
Otto gets lost in a busy market, but kind strangers help him find the way.
The market was full of colours and noise. Red spices, golden scarves and baskets of fruit were piled high. Otto was holding Tomas’s hand, but a crowd swept between them, and suddenly Otto was alone.
Otto turned round and round. Everything looked the same. His eyes filled with tears. Then Cara the deer leaned over a stall. ‘Are you lost, little one?’ she asked in a soft voice.
‘I can’t find my friend,’ sniffed Otto. Cara gave him sweet dates. ‘Eat that,’ she said, ‘and we’ll find them together.’ She rang a bell and called to the other sellers.
Word spread from stall to stall. Cleo the duck ran ahead to look. A merchant lifted Otto onto a crate so he could see over the crowd. And there was Tomas, searching just as hard!
They threw their arms round each other. ‘I was so scared!’ said Tomas. ‘Me too,’ said Otto. They thanked everyone. And from that day on, they always held hands in busy places.
