Poppy Welcomes Kiki
A new child arrives at the playground and nobody talks to Kiki. Poppy steps forward.
It was a sunny morning at the park. Children were running, jumping and laughing. But over by the fence, Kiki stood alone. Kiki had just moved to town and didn’t know anybody.
Poppy noticed. She saw how quiet Kiki was, with her hands tucked in her pockets. Poppy remembered what it felt like to be new. She took a deep breath and walked over.
‘Hi,’ said Poppy. ‘I’m Poppy. Do you want to play tag?’ Kiki’s face lit up. ‘Yes, please!’ she said. ‘I’m Kiki.’ And they ran off together.
Soon Tilly joined in too. They played tag until the sun was high. Kiki laughed so much that her tummy hurt. It was the best first day ever.
At home time, Kiki turned to Poppy. ‘Thank you for saying hello,’ she said. Poppy smiled. ‘See you tomorrow!’ And they waved all the way down the road.
