While walking in the woods, Percy found a big, speckled green egg beside a cold stream. It was cold and all alone. ‘Where’s your mum?’ he asked. The egg didn’t answer, of course.
Percy looked and looked, but nobody came. The sun was going down. ‘I can’t leave you here,’ he said, and wrapped the egg in his scarf. Then he carried it home, very carefully.
For three days, Percy kept the egg warm. He read it stories. He sang songs. On the fourth night, there was a CRACK! A tiny claw poked out. Then a little nose. Then a pair of big golden eyes.
It was a baby dragon! It sneezed a small puff of smoke and promptly climbed into Percy’s lap. ‘Dot,’ Percy whispered. That was just the right name.
But Dot grew quickly. It ate everything. It followed Percy to the shops, and the school gate, and the park. People pointed and whispered. ‘It’s too big to live in a house,’ sighed Percy.
Percy went to Daisy the deer, who lived on the hill and knew about dragons. ‘Dragons need mountains,’ said Daisy. ‘But I can show you where the dragon family lives.’
They climbed all day. At the top, there were big dragons everywhere! Dot flew to them, then turned and flew back to give Percy a hug. ‘Goodbye,’ whispered Percy. ‘Come and visit me!’
Every spring after that, a little puff of smoke appeared at Percy’s window. And Percy always knew a friend had come to say hello.
