Wally and the Map to Treasure Island
Wally finds an old map with a big red X. Time to go hunting for treasure!
Wally was a young pirate, and had a small ship called the Sea Sparrow. One day, Wally found a bottle on the beach. Inside was a rolled-up map with a big red X. ‘Treasure!’ squawked Pippa the parrot.
The map showed how to find an island with a crooked cave. ‘Let’s go!’ said Wally. With Ollie the cow at the wheel and Pippa on Wally’s shoulder, the Sea Sparrow set sail. The wind filled the sail.
They sailed past a school of dancing fish and a very big, very friendly whale. They sailed through a rainy cloud and out the other side. At last, Pippa cried, ‘Land ahoy!’ And there was the island.
They followed the map: ten steps past a crooked cave, then left at the tall rock, then three steps towards the old well. ‘Here!’ said Wally. The red X was painted on a flat, white stone. They dug and dug.
Clunk! The spade hit something hard. It was a chest! Wally opened the lid slowly. Inside lay gold coins and shiny gems. ‘Wow!’ said Ollie. ‘It’s not what I expected,’ said Wally, ‘but it’s wonderful.’
Back on the ship, Wally sat thinking. ‘We can’t keep all this,’ he said. ‘It would be better to share it.’ Pippa squawked, ‘Share! Share!’ So they sailed home and gave the treasure to build a new library.
The villagers cheered. They threw a big party on the beach with music and fire and fish stew. ‘This,’ said Wally, looking round at all the happy faces, ‘is the best treasure of all.’
