A New Friend for Kira
A new child arrives at the playground and nobody talks to Theo. Kira steps forward.
It was a sunny morning at the park. Children were running, jumping and laughing. But over by the fence, Theo stood alone. Theo had just moved to town and didn’t know anybody.
Kira noticed. She saw how quiet Theo was, with his hands tucked in his pockets. Kira remembered what it felt like to be new. She took a deep breath and walked over.
‘Hi,’ said Kira. ‘I’m Kira. Do you want to play hopscotch?’ Theo’s face lit up. ‘Yes, please!’ he said. ‘I’m Theo.’ And they ran off together.
Soon Benji joined in too. They played hopscotch until the sun was high. Theo laughed so much that his tummy hurt. It was the best first day ever.
At home time, Theo turned to Kira. ‘Thank you for saying hello,’ he said. Kira smiled. ‘See you tomorrow!’ And they waved all the way down the road.
