A Night in the Igloo with Layla
Layla builds an igloo with her family and has a snug night under the northern lights.
Layla lived in a land of ice and snow. One bright, cold morning, Layla said, ‘Let’s build an igloo!’ With Leo the lamb, she cut blocks of snow and stacked them in a ring.
Block by block, the dome grew higher. Soon there was a round white house with a little doorway. Inside, it was dim and snug. Layla laid down furs, a lantern and sweet berries.
That night, they ate sweet berries and told stories. Outside the wind howled, but in the igloo it was warm. Leo snuggled up. ‘This is the best house,’ he said, yawning.
Then Layla crept outside. The sky was dancing! Green and purple ribbons of light swirled across the stars, the northern lights. Layla gasped. Leo came out too. They stood quietly and watched.
Later, tucked in under the furs, Layla whispered, ‘Goodnight, igloo.’ And as the aurora flickered over the snow, Layla fell asleep with a smile.
