Amara’s First Treasure Map
Amara finds an old map with a big red X. Time to go hunting for treasure!
Amara was a young pirate, and had a small ship called the Sea Sparrow. One day, Amara found a bottle on the beach. Inside was a rolled-up map with a big red X. ‘Treasure!’ squawked Pippa the parrot.
The map showed how to find an island with a big whale-bone gate. ‘Let’s go!’ said Amara. With Dot the duck at the wheel and Pippa on Amara’s shoulder, the Sea Sparrow set sail. The wind filled the sail.
They sailed past a school of dancing fish and a very big, very friendly whale. They sailed through a rainy cloud and out the other side. At last, Pippa cried, ‘Land ahoy!’ And there was the island.
They followed the map: ten steps past a big whale-bone gate, then left at the tall rock, then three steps towards the old well. ‘Here!’ said Amara. The red X was painted on a flat, white stone. They dug and dug.
Clunk! The spade hit something hard. It was a chest! Amara opened the lid slowly. Inside lay tins of seeds and bulbs. ‘Wow!’ said Dot. ‘It’s not what I expected,’ said Amara, ‘but it’s wonderful.’
Back on the ship, Amara sat thinking. ‘We can’t keep all this,’ she said. ‘It would be better to share it.’ Pippa squawked, ‘Share! Share!’ So they sailed home and gave the treasure to plant a village garden.
The villagers cheered. They threw a big party on the beach with music and fire and fish stew. ‘This,’ said Amara, looking round at all the happy faces, ‘is the best treasure of all.’
