It was Dev’s birthday, and he wanted a lemon cake. ‘I’ll bake it myself,’ said Dev. He put on his chef’s hat and mixed the batter. ‘This will be easy!’
But when Dev slid the cake into the oven, he got so excited that he sneezed. WHOOSH! A burst of flame shot out, and the cake came out as a black lump. ‘Oh dear,’ he said.
Dev tried again. And again. And again! Each cake was crispier than the last. There were burnt cakes on the table, on the floor, and one on the cat. Dev was close to tears.
Just then, Ruby the little bird and Hattie the kitten knocked at the door. ‘Happy birthday!’ they said. ‘Is that smoke?’ ‘I’ve lost my cake,’ said Dev, sniffling. ‘It keeps burning.’
‘We’ll help,’ said Ruby. ‘I’ll mix. Hattie will watch the oven. And you can be in charge of the a ripe cherry.’ So everyone had a job, and Dev stayed well away from the oven.
Soon, a wonderful smell filled the kitchen. Hattie opened the oven door. There was a perfect, golden lemon cake. ‘It’s lovely!’ cried Dev. He added a ripe cherry on top.
They lit one candle, and Dev blew on it, very gently. ‘Happy birthday to me!’ he sang. They ate cake until their tummies were round. ‘Best birthday ever,’ sighed Dev. ‘Because we made it together.’
