In spring, Kofi the pony gave Poppy a tiny seed. ‘It’s a tulip,’ said Kofi. ‘Plant it in the soil, give it water and sun, and be patient.’ Poppy dug a little hole.
Every morning, Poppy ran to look. Nothing. Not even a sprout. ‘Is it broken?’ she asked Enzo. ‘Plants take time,’ said Enzo. Poppy sighed, but watered the soil once more.
A week passed. Then two. Then, one morning, Poppy saw something green poking up. A tiny shoot, no bigger than a thumb. Poppy gasped. ‘It’s growing!’ Enzo danced round and round.
Soon the shoot was a stem, with leaves and then a bud. Poppy watered it, sang to it and shielded it from the wind. And one sunny day, the bud opened, and there was a beautiful tulip.
‘You waited so patiently,’ said Kofi. Poppy smiled at the tulip. ‘It was worth every day,’ she said. And she saved a seed for next spring.
The little lesson
