Cape Day for Freya
It’s Cape Day at school, but Freya forgot to bring a cape. Can a hero be a hero without one?
It was Cape Day at school. Everyone had been told to bring a cape and be a superhero for the day. Freya had packed her bag very carefully. But when she got to school, she realised she had forgotten the cape.
All around the playground, children were swooshing in red capes, blue capes and sparkly ones. ‘Where’s yours?’ asked Mabel. Freya felt a lump in her throat. ‘I forgot it,’ she said quietly.
Freya went to the quiet corner and sat down, feeling left out. But then she saw Hattie the panda, who was crying. Hattie’s cape had been ripped in the wind, and it lay in a sad, floppy heap.
Freya didn’t think twice. She stood up and said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll help.’ She knelt down and began to tie the torn pieces together. It wasn’t perfect, but it held. ‘There,’ said Freya. ‘Good as new.’
Hattie gave Freya a big hug. ‘Thank you,’ Hattie said. Then Mabel came over. ‘I saw what you did,’ Mabel said. ‘That was the best hero thing anyone did all day.’
Their teacher beamed. ‘Look, everyone! Freya is a hero without a cape.’ She went to the cupboard and found a polka-dot scarf. They tied it round Freya’s shoulders. It was the most beautiful cape in the school.
‘Heroes aren’t about what they wear,’ said the teacher. ‘They’re about what they do.’ And for the rest of the day, Freya flew round the playground, with a polka-dot scarf flapping proudly behind her.
