Dexter Learns to Swim
Dexter is afraid of the deep water, but a patient friend helps him take one little step at a time.
The swimming pool was huge and blue. Dexter stood at the edge, toes curled. The water looked so deep. βI canβt do it,β Dexter whispered. His knees were wobbling.
Zane the deer smiled kindly. βWeβll go slowly,β he said. βFirst, just put your feet in.β Dexter sat on the side and dipped his toes. Splash! It was cool and nice.
Next, Dexter stepped into the shallow end with armbands. Xena the whale swam beside him. βIβll stay right here,β said Xena. Dexter kicked. Splash, splash, splash!
Day by day, Dexter did more. He blew bubbles. He floated on his back, looking at the ceiling lights. He even put his face in the water. Each time, Xena cheered.
At last, the day came. Dexter pushed off the wall and swam, all by himself, across the pool. βIβm swimming!β he shouted. Everyone applauded. Dexter had never felt so proud.
