Dot was a little dragon who was scared of fire. Whenever she felt a tickle in her nose, she held it tight. ‘Please, please don’t let me sneeze,’ she whispered.
‘Dragons breathe fire!’ laughed Dexter the duck. ‘Look!’ Dexter lit a tiny candle, and it flickered. Dot hid behind her tail. ‘It’s too hot, too bright, too scary!’
One chilly evening, Dexter and Layla the little bird were shivering. Their campfire had gone out, and the wind was blowing hard. ‘If only we had a spark,’ said Layla.
Dot looked at her friends. Her tummy was wobbly, but she thought, ‘They are cold, and I can help.’ She took a tiny breath. She closed her eyes. And she gently puffed.
Pffft! A small golden flame floated out, just as big as a button. It landed on the logs, and the campfire woke up. Crackle, crackle, crackle. It was warm and golden, not scary at all!
‘You melted the ice on the pond!’ said Dexter. Dot opened one eye, then the other. ‘I did!’ she said. ‘It’s not scary when it’s gentle.’ Dot snuggled by the fire with her friends.
