Benji and the Time-Travelling Bike

Benji finds an old bicycle in the shed that rides all the way back to the age of dinosaurs.

On a rainy Saturday, Benji was tidying the shed when he found an old bicycle under a sheet. It was covered in dust, with a bell shaped like a clock. Isaac came over. ‘Let’s take it for a ride!’

Benji sat on the saddle and Isaac jumped up behind. They rang the bell, ding-a-ling, and pedalled out into the garden. The air started to swirl. The garden turned into a blur of colours. WHOOSH!

When the swirling stopped, they were in a steamy green jungle. Giant ferns towered above them. Strange birds called in the trees. Then the ground shook, thump, thump, thump.

Out from behind a tree stepped a dinosaur! It was as big as a bus, with a long neck and a kind face. Oscar looked at them and made a rumbling sound. It was crying. A tear rolled down its cheek.

‘What’s wrong?’ asked Benji. Oscar pointed with a huge nose to a tiny egg that had rolled into a muddy ditch. It was too deep for Oscar to reach, but just right for Benji’s small hands.

Benji climbed down and carefully lifted the egg. Isaac held Benji’s hand to pull him out. Oscar took the egg back, as gently as a feather. A happy rumble echoed through the trees.

‘Thank you,’ the dinosaur’s eyes seemed to say. Oscar gave Benji a feather as long as a broom. Then the bicycle bell rang by itself. ‘Time to go home,’ said Isaac. They pedalled away, waving.

They popped back into the shed, with the rain still tapping on the roof. The bicycle was just a bicycle again. But on the saddle sat a feather as long as a broom. ‘Same time next Saturday?’ grinned Isaac.
