The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Hugo the hedgehog yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the sleepy hills,’ whispered Hugo. He stepped out into the garden in his nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Bella, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the soft grass,’ whispered Hugo. He walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the silver moon,’ whispered Hugo. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Hugo smiled back. His eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Hugo walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Bella tucked the blanket up to Hugo’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Hugo,’ said Bella.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Hugo. He closed his eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
- What do you see out of your window at night?
