Hattie’s Mystery Soup
Hattie is making soup, but the sugar and salt got swapped, and so did a few other things!
Hattie the bear was cooking soup for dinner. She chopped leeks. She stirred and stirred. The kitchen smelled almost ready. ‘Now for the seasoning,’ said Hattie, humming.
But Hattie wasn’t looking carefully. She grabbed the wrong jar. In went a whole jar of pepper! Hattie gave the soup a big stir. It looked okay. It smelled okay. She didn’t know about the mistake yet.
Soon, Freddie the raccoon and Kiki the elephant arrived, rubbing their tummies. ‘Soup’s ready!’ said Hattie proudly. Everybody sat down. Everybody picked up a spoon.
Freddie took a big slurp. Freddie’s eyes went round. Kiki took a mouthful. Kiki’s whiskers curled. It was so hot they sneezed! ‘Hmm,’ said Freddie. ‘It’s... Interesting.’
Hattie took a taste. ‘Oh no!’ she gasped. ‘I used the wrong jar!’ Her ears went pink. She wanted to hide under the table. But Kiki burst into giggles, and then Freddie did too.
‘Let’s fix it!’ said Freddie. They added a bit of this and a bit of that. Some extra leeks, a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of the right seasoning. They tasted again. ‘Perfect!’
They ate every drop. ‘It’s the best soup ever,’ said Freddie. ‘Even better than the first one,’ said Kiki. Hattie laughed. ‘Okay,’ she said, ‘but next time, I’m reading the labels.’
