Hic! Said Tomas
Tomas has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Tomas the hippo woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Tomas. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them knocked over a tower of jam jars. Another made Hugo the squirrel bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Tomas. ‘I need to stop!’
Hugo had an idea. ‘Try holding your breath!’ So Tomas tried. He did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at him.
Ollie the deer had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Ollie hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Tomas wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all he said.
The friends sat down, tired. Hugo was so tired that he began to hum. Ollie joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Tomas watched and began to giggle.
Tomas laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Tomas waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Ollie. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
