Idris Lives Where It’s Cold
Idris builds an igloo with her family and has a snug night under the northern lights.
Idris lived in a land of ice and snow. One bright, cold morning, Idris said, ‘Let’s build an igloo!’ With Pippa the puppy, he cut blocks of snow and stacked them in a ring.
Block by block, the dome grew higher. Soon there was a round white house with a little doorway. Inside, it was dim and snug. Idris laid down furs, a lantern and hot soup.
That night, they ate hot soup and told stories. Outside the wind howled, but in the igloo it was warm. Pippa snuggled up. ‘This is the best house,’ she said, yawning.
Then Idris crept outside. The sky was dancing! Green and purple ribbons of light swirled across the stars, the northern lights. Idris gasped. Pippa came out too. They stood quietly and watched.
Later, tucked in under the furs, Idris whispered, ‘Goodnight, igloo.’ And as the aurora flickered over the snow, Idris fell asleep with a smile.
