Jack’s First Camping Trip
Jack sleeps in a tent for the first time and hears all the night sounds of the woods.
Jack and Bruno the bear were going camping! They carried their backpacks into the woods. They put up a tent, rolled out sleeping bags and collected twigs for a campfire.
As the sun went down, Cosmo the turtle lit the fire. They toasted baked beans and sang songs. Orange sparks drifted up into the sky. Jack thought it was the loveliest evening ever.
Later, they crawled into the tent. Zip! It was dark and snug. Then Jack heard a noise outside. ‘yip-yip!’ It was a fox. Jack sat up, a little scared.
‘It’s only a fox,’ whispered Bruno. They lifted the flap a crack. Moonlight shone on the grass. A thousand stars blinked above. Jack smiled. The sounds weren’t scary. They were the forest’s goodnight song.
In the morning, birds were singing. Jack woke up, stretched and unzipped the tent. Dew sparkled on the grass. ‘Can we do it again?’ he asked. ‘Every summer,’ said Cosmo.
