Kiki Finds a Chest
Kiki digs up a chest. There’s no gold inside, just a note that says ‘look behind you’.
Kiki the duck was a little pirate, and had one wish: to find treasure. She had a spade and a map. She had a hat with a feather. All she needed was a chest of gold.
Kiki walked across the island, counting steps. ‘One, two, three, four,’ she said. At last she came to a big white rock. ‘X marks the spot,’ she whispered. She began to dig.
Dig, dig, dig! Clunk! There it was, a little wooden chest. Kiki’s heart was pounding. She took a deep breath and lifted the lid. Inside was no gold or jewels at all. There was only a note.
The note said, ‘The real treasure is behind you.’ Kiki turned around. Standing there, with a big smile and a basket of sweet coconut, was Tilly the turtle.
‘Hello,’ said Tilly. ‘I buried the chest to find a friend. I’m new on the island and didn’t know anyone. I wanted someone who loved adventure.’ Kiki grinned from ear to ear.
They sat on the sand, sharing sweet coconut and telling stories. As the sun set, Kiki said, ‘You know, you’re better than gold.’ ‘You too,’ said Tilly. And they sailed home together.
The little lesson
