Layla’s Mystery Soup
Layla is making soup, but the sugar and salt got swapped, and so did a few other things!
Layla the lion was cooking soup for dinner. She chopped sweetcorn. She stirred and stirred. The kitchen smelled almost ready. ‘Now for the seasoning,’ said Layla, humming.
But Layla wasn’t looking carefully. She grabbed the wrong jar. In went a tin of custard instead of cream! Layla gave the soup a big stir. It looked okay. It smelled okay. She didn’t know about the mistake yet.
Soon, Kiki the kitten and Maya the bear arrived, rubbing their tummies. ‘Soup’s ready!’ said Layla proudly. Everybody sat down. Everybody picked up a spoon.
Kiki took a big slurp. Kiki’s eyes went round. Maya took a mouthful. Maya’s whiskers curled. It was yellow and wobbly! ‘Hmm,’ said Kiki. ‘It’s... Interesting.’
Layla took a taste. ‘Oh no!’ she gasped. ‘I used the wrong jar!’ Her ears went pink. She wanted to hide under the table. But Maya burst into giggles, and then Kiki did too.
‘Let’s fix it!’ said Kiki. They added a bit of this and a bit of that. Some extra sweetcorn, a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of the right seasoning. They tasted again. ‘Perfect!’
They ate every drop. ‘It’s the best soup ever,’ said Kiki. ‘Even better than the first one,’ said Maya. Layla laughed. ‘Okay,’ she said, ‘but next time, I’m reading the labels.’
