Lena Learns to Swim

Lena is afraid of the deep water, but a patient friend helps her take one little step at a time.

The swimming pool was huge and blue. Lena stood at the edge, toes curled. The water looked so deep. β€˜I can’t do it,’ Lena whispered. Her knees were wobbling.

Toby the turtle smiled kindly. β€˜We’ll go slowly,’ he said. β€˜First, just put your feet in.’ Lena sat on the side and dipped her toes. Splash! It was cool and nice.

Next, Lena stepped into the shallow end with a foam float. Cara the crab swam beside her. β€˜I’ll stay right here,’ said Cara. Lena kicked. Splash, splash, splash!

Day by day, Lena did more. She blew bubbles. She floated on her back, looking at the ceiling lights. She even put her face in the water. Each time, Cara cheered.

At last, the day came. Lena pushed off the wall and swam, all by herself, across the pool. β€˜I’m swimming!’ she shouted. Everyone applauded. Lena had never felt so proud.
