Luca and the Hiccups
Luca has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Luca the lion woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Luca. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them made the cake jump out of the oven. Another made Oscar the hedgehog bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Luca. ‘I need to stop!’
Oscar had an idea. ‘Try standing on one leg!’ So Luca tried. He did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at him.
Amy the hippo had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Amy hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Luca wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all he said.
The friends sat down, tired. Oscar was so tired that he began to hum. Amy joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Luca watched and began to giggle.
Luca laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Luca waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Amy. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
