The Day Luca’s Hair Stood Up
Luca’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Luca woke up to find that his hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Luca tried to flatten it with some sticky tape. But the hair just stuck the tape to the dog and the dog to the sofa. ‘Oh no,’ he groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ He tried again. And again.
By the time Luca gave up, his hair was wilder than ever. He went to school with his hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Freya the lamb spotted him.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Freya. Luca sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Freya grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Esme the hedgehog said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Luca began to smile. He felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ He flashed. And in the photo, Luca sat in the middle with a huge grin, his hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Luca’s hairstyle the next day. And Luca learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
