In the jungle, everyone had a big voice. Lena the lion could roar. Cara the panda could screech. But Mabel the squirrel could only make a peep.
‘Speak up!’ said everyone. Mabel tried and tried, but only a peep came out. Mabel felt sad. ‘I wish I had a big voice,’ she said. Lena gave Mabel a hug. ‘You are perfect as you are,’ she said.
That night, a storm rolled in. Thunder boomed and rain poured. Baby Cara was lost in the thick leaves. All the big voices called, but the thunder drowned them out.
Mabel listened. Between thunder claps, she heard a faint cry. It was high and thin, the kind of sound that big voices couldn’t hear. Mabel called back with a peep. And Cara heard it.
Following the tiny sound, Cara found the way home. Everyone cheered. ‘Only Mabel could make a sound that carries through the storm!’ said Lena. Mabel grinned.
