In spring, Mei the owl gave Mabel a tiny seed. ‘It’s a strawberry plant,’ said Mei. ‘Plant it in the soil, give it water and sun, and be patient.’ Mabel dug a little hole.
Every morning, Mabel ran to look. Nothing. Not even a sprout. ‘Is it broken?’ she asked Poppy. ‘Plants take time,’ said Poppy. Mabel sighed, but watered the soil once more.
A week passed. Then two. Then, one morning, Mabel saw something green poking up. A tiny shoot, no bigger than a thumb. Mabel gasped. ‘It’s growing!’ Poppy danced round and round.
Soon the shoot was a stem, with leaves and then a bud. Mabel watered it, sang to it and shielded it from the wind. And one sunny day, the bud opened, and there was a beautiful strawberry plant.
‘You waited so patiently,’ said Mei. Mabel smiled at the strawberry plant. ‘It was worth every day,’ she said. And she saved a seed for next spring.
