Nate was a little dragon who was scared of fire. Whenever he felt a tickle in his nose, he held it tight. ‘Please, please don’t let me sneeze,’ he whispered.
‘Dragons breathe fire!’ laughed Hugo the hedgehog. ‘Look!’ Hugo lit a tiny candle, and it flickered. Nate hid behind his tail. ‘It’s too hot, too bright, too scary!’
One chilly evening, Hugo and Isla the squirrel were shivering. Their campfire had gone out, and the wind was blowing hard. ‘If only we had a spark,’ said Isla.
Nate looked at his friends. His tummy was wobbly, but he thought, ‘They are cold, and I can help.’ He took a tiny breath. He closed his eyes. And he gently puffed.
Pffft! A small golden flame floated out, just as big as a button. It landed on the logs, and the campfire woke up. Crackle, crackle, crackle. It was warm and golden, not scary at all!
‘You warmed the soup!’ said Hugo. Nate opened one eye, then the other. ‘I did!’ he said. ‘It’s not scary when it’s gentle.’ Nate snuggled by the fire with his friends.
