Nell and the Wild Hair
Nell’s hair will not lie flat. Nothing works! What will happen at school photo day?
It was school photo day, and Nell woke up to find that her hair was sticking up like a bird’s nest. There were curls. There were spikes. There was even a tuft that pointed at the ceiling.
Nell tried to flatten it with some sticky tape. But the hair just stuck the tape to the dog and the dog to the sofa. ‘Oh no,’ she groaned. ‘I can’t go to school like this!’ She tried again. And again.
By the time Nell gave up, her hair was wilder than ever. She went to school with her hood pulled right down. But at the school gate, Zeke the frog spotted her.
‘Why are you wearing your hood?’ asked Zeke. Nell sighed and pulled it down. Everyone gasped. Then Zeke grinned. ‘That’s AMAZING! It looks like a lion’s mane! Can I touch it?’
Soon, a crowd gathered. Hana the hippo said, ‘It looks like a firework!’ Someone else said it looked like a sunflower. Nell began to smile. She felt a bit like a celebrity.
Photo time came. The photographer sat everyone in rows. ‘Smile!’ She flashed. And in the photo, Nell sat in the middle with a huge grin, her hair standing up like a crown.
Everyone loved the photo. Some of the other children tried to copy Nell’s hairstyle the next day. And Nell learned something: sometimes the thing you think is a problem is just a different kind of wonderful.
