How Zoe Got Rid of the Hiccups
Zoe has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Zoe the pony woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Zoe. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them blew all the leaves off the tree. Another made Leo the duck bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Zoe. ‘I need to stop!’
Leo had an idea. ‘Try getting a big scare!’ So Zoe tried. She did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at her.
Tara the lamb had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Tara hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Zoe wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all she said.
The friends sat down, tired. Leo was so tired that he began to hum. Tara joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Zoe watched and began to giggle.
Zoe laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Zoe waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Tara. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
