Nico was a little dragon who was scared of fire. Whenever he felt a tickle in his nose, he held it tight. ‘Please, please don’t let me sneeze,’ he whispered.
‘Dragons breathe fire!’ laughed Bella the bee. ‘Look!’ Bella lit a tiny candle, and it flickered. Nico hid behind his tail. ‘It’s too hot, too bright, too scary!’
One chilly evening, Bella and Hugo the duck were shivering. Their campfire had gone out, and the wind was blowing hard. ‘If only we had a spark,’ said Hugo.
Nico looked at his friends. His tummy was wobbly, but he thought, ‘They are cold, and I can help.’ He took a tiny breath. He closed his eyes. And he gently puffed.
Pffft! A small golden flame floated out, just as big as a button. It landed on the logs, and the campfire woke up. Crackle, crackle, crackle. It was warm and golden, not scary at all!
‘You lit the birthday candle!’ said Bella. Nico opened one eye, then the other. ‘I did!’ he said. ‘It’s not scary when it’s gentle.’ Nico snuggled by the fire with his friends.
