The sun slipped down behind the hills. The sky turned pink, then purple, then blue. Pearl the piglet yawned a big, round yawn. It was nearly bedtime.
‘Goodnight, the tall trees,’ whispered Pearl. She stepped out into the garden in her nightcap. The air was soft and still. ‘Goodnight,’ said Kai, waving from next door.
‘Goodnight, the whispering wind,’ whispered Pearl. She walked slowly along the path, step, step, step. Everything was getting quieter and sleepier.
‘Goodnight, the smiling moon,’ whispered Pearl. The moon looked down and smiled a soft, silvery smile. Pearl smiled back. Her eyelids felt heavy as feathers.
Pearl walked back to the cosy house and climbed into bed. Kai tucked the blanket up to Pearl’s chin. ‘Goodnight, Pearl,’ said Kai.
‘Goodnight, everyone,’ murmured Pearl. She closed her eyes. And outside, the whole world whispered back: goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
The little lesson
A gentle goodnight to everything around us helps us feel calm and ready for sleep.
Let’s talk about it
- Who do you like to say goodnight to?
