In the jungle, everyone had a big voice. Pippa the hippo could roar. Lily the lion could screech. But Dani the little bird could only make a squeak.
‘Speak up!’ said everyone. Dani tried and tried, but only a squeak came out. Dani felt sad. ‘I wish I had a big voice,’ she said. Pippa gave Dani a hug. ‘You are perfect as you are,’ she said.
That night, a storm rolled in. Thunder boomed and rain poured. Baby Lily was lost in the thick leaves. All the big voices called, but the thunder drowned them out.
Dani listened. Between thunder claps, she heard a faint cry. It was high and thin, the kind of sound that big voices couldn’t hear. Dani called back with a squeak. And Lily heard it.
Following the tiny sound, Lily found the way home. Everyone cheered. ‘Only Dani could make a sound that carries through the storm!’ said Pippa. Dani grinned.
