Rocco’s Hero Without a Cape
It’s Cape Day at school, but Rocco forgot to bring a cape. Can a hero be a hero without one?
It was Cape Day at school. Everyone had been told to bring a cape and be a superhero for the day. Rocco had packed his bag very carefully. But when he got to school, he realised he had forgotten the cape.
All around the playground, children were swooshing in red capes, blue capes and sparkly ones. ‘Where’s yours?’ asked Iris. Rocco felt a lump in his throat. ‘I forgot it,’ he said quietly.
Rocco went to the quiet corner and sat down, feeling left out. But then he saw Olive the owl, who was crying. Olive’s cape had been caught in the door, and it lay in a sad, floppy heap.
Rocco didn’t think twice. He stood up and said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll help.’ He knelt down and began to tie the torn pieces together. It wasn’t perfect, but it held. ‘There,’ said Rocco. ‘Good as new.’
Olive gave Rocco a big hug. ‘Thank you,’ Olive said. Then Iris came over. ‘I saw what you did,’ Iris said. ‘That was the best hero thing anyone did all day.’
Their teacher beamed. ‘Look, everyone! Rocco is a hero without a cape.’ She went to the cupboard and found a polka-dot scarf. They tied it round Rocco’s shoulders. It was the most beautiful cape in the school.
‘Heroes aren’t about what they wear,’ said the teacher. ‘They’re about what they do.’ And for the rest of the day, Rocco flew round the playground, with a polka-dot scarf flapping proudly behind him.
