Sam the Parrot Can’t Keep a Secret
Sam the parrot repeats everything he hears, including the secret surprise party!
It was nearly Captain Bruno’s birthday, and Finn had a secret plan. ‘We’ll give the Captain a pirate-ship piñata!’ he whispered. ‘But nobody must say a word.’ Sam the parrot nodded very seriously.
But Sam was a parrot, and parrots repeat everything. When Bruno walked by, Sam said, ‘SECRET! SECRET! A pirate-ship piñata!’ Finn jumped up. ‘Er, nothing!’ he said. ‘It’s just Sam being silly.’
Bruno raised an eyebrow. ‘A secret?’ he said. ‘What secret?’ Sam opened his beak. Finn quickly stuffed a cracker in it. Sam said, ‘Mmph! Mmph!’ which was the nearest he could get.
All week, Finn had to guard the surprise. He hid it in the cabin. He kept Sam busy with crackers and games. Sam nearly told again three times. Once, Sam even began to sing the whole plan.
On the big day, Bruno stepped onto the deck, and everyone jumped up. ‘SURPRISE!’ they shouted. Bruno looked so astonished. And then Sam flapped up and squawked, ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY!’ before anyone else could.
Bruno laughed so much that his hat fell off. ‘I knew there was a secret,’ he said, ‘but I didn’t know it would be such a good one.’ Finn gave Bruno a pirate-ship piñata, and Sam got the biggest cracker.
The little lesson
Keeping a surprise secret is hard, but the surprise is worth waiting for.
