X Marks the Spot, Says Kiki
Kiki finds an old map with a big red X. Time to go hunting for treasure!
Kiki was a young pirate, and had a small ship called the Sea Sparrow. One day, Kiki found a bottle on the beach. Inside was a rolled-up map with a big red X. ‘Treasure!’ squawked Percy the parrot.
The map showed how to find an island with a pink coral arch. ‘Let’s go!’ said Kiki. With Pearl the piglet at the wheel and Percy on Kiki’s shoulder, the Sea Sparrow set sail. The wind filled the sail.
They sailed past a school of dancing fish and a very big, very friendly whale. They sailed through a rainy cloud and out the other side. At last, Percy cried, ‘Land ahoy!’ And there was the island.
They followed the map: ten steps past a pink coral arch, then left at the tall rock, then three steps towards the old well. ‘Here!’ said Kiki. The red X was painted on a flat, white stone. They dug and dug.
Clunk! The spade hit something hard. It was a chest! Kiki opened the lid slowly. Inside lay sailing books and kites. ‘Wow!’ said Pearl. ‘It’s not what I expected,’ said Kiki, ‘but it’s wonderful.’
Back on the ship, Kiki sat thinking. ‘We can’t keep all this,’ she said. ‘It would be better to share it.’ Percy squawked, ‘Share! Share!’ So they sailed home and gave the treasure to the seaside fair.
The villagers cheered. They threw a big party on the beach with music and fire and fish stew. ‘This,’ said Kiki, looking round at all the happy faces, ‘is the best treasure of all.’
